Oil companies operating in Uganda should take interest in the ongoing exploration of oil in the western part of the country, the energy minister, Daudi Migereko, has said.
Migereko said characteristics of the recently-discovered oil were good and oil flows were estimated at 14,000 barrels per day.
He said this at a meeting with representatives of the five leading oil companies.
Migereko said the Government would soon issue a statement about its plans for oil production in the country.
Present at the meeting was Ivan Kyayonka, the managing director of Shell, Christopher Jacquet (Total), Allain Young (Caltex) and Daniel Segal (Kobil).
A statement from Migereko’s office said the oil companies, under the chairmanship of Ivan Kyayonka, had raised a number of issues that majored on oil supply and distribution in the country.
The companies complained to the minister that the trucks they use for transporting petroleum products from Mombasa to Uganda have problems with finding parking space in Mombasa and at the Kenyan border.
They said the Kenya oil pipeline on the Kenyan side could no longer cope with Uganda’s demand.
Migereko reportedly promised to visit Mombasa Port.
