Doesn't look like MIK is involved with transcore, with transcore announcing a sale of their eGo RFID tags and no announcement from MIK, shareprice looking very sick as well.

CHICAGO, 9th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems, Oct. 14, 2002 - TransCore announces that Shenzhen Customs in Shenzhen, China is using the company’s eGo™ radio frequency identification (RFID) products as part of a multimillion dollar automatic vehicle and driver detection and identification system. This intelligent border crossing application is expected to facilitate the flow of low-risk traffic and goods while assisting customs agents as they combat smuggling between Hong Kong and mainland China.

Shenzhen, designated as a special economic zone in 1979, has become a major center for manufacturing and trade as well as a main conduit between China and the special administrative region of Hong Kong, which borders Shenzhen. Smuggling in this region has become a challenge for the Chinese government as the rate of international trade has accelerated. In the past year alone, Shenzhen Customs seized 20 times more contraband telecommunications equipment than the previous year. Subsequently, because of the delay for closer inspection of vehicles, international business commuters in the region have expressed concern regarding the extended wait times at border crossing facilities.

“China is dedicated to providing a world-class border crossing system that will serve as a model within the country and to the international community,” said Xu Ji-ren, director and general manager of Sichuan MCS Engineering Co., Ltd., the system installer and integrator of TransCore’s RFID sensor equipment for this project.

Shenzhen Customs will initially deploy 100,000 tags using TransCore’s eGo technology, along with 80 UAP/915 readers for 80 traffic lanes. Long-term expansion plans for the whole of Guangdong Province, where Shenzhen is located, will require additional equipment.

    How the System Works

The Shenzhen Customs system assigns unique electronic identity numbers to both drivers and vehicles, encoded in tamper-resistant wireless communication windshield tags. One tag is permanently mounted on the windscreen and one tag is assigned to the driver. The driver inserts the “driver tag” in a hanger mounted on the windscreen when he or she is in the car. As the driver and vehicle approach the customs lane, both tags are read by the reader and a match is made.

Using these lane-mounted readers to scan all vehicles automatically, the border system allows low-risk, compliant vehicles and drivers to be identified, screened and to pass quickly through the border check point and enables customs’ personnel to rapidly screen out non-compliant, high-risk vehicles and drivers for further inspection. This application of TransCore’s RFID technology solves two key problems facing busy border crossing zones worldwide: the need for the unhindered flow of traffic and goods while enhancing security.
