It was an unmitigated disaster. They need western capital and experienced miners to handle this project and the government of Myanmar was set to take 50% of the profits regardless of who is in power and who was mining.

Keep in mind that there is a collection of owners of Bawdwin. 49% owned by two of Myanmar's larger private conglomerates who pay substantial taxes in other businesses. 51% MYL (with a subset that equates to approximately 10% of the mine owned by China via Perilya). Then the government will end up with half the revenue for zero investment. I do not believe it is in anyway in the militaries interests to hand anything to China for free and there is a history of strategic tension between China and Myanmar that would indicate the military will want support but not to be consumed by China.

It will be interesting but I think there is a possibility we see a quick transition to MIC type approval as the military attempts to prove they are doing a good job.

I agree Kalenn, there could be a silver lining on the MIC front as you suggest, however the part that I haven't got my head around is the financing of the mine construction. It going to take a while before any large scale financier musters up the courage to whip out their cheque book - given the speed of change in power, and thus the question of collateral / ownership would scare anyone....
