Rain, flooding widespread
More than 9 inches of rain fell throughout Vero Beach over 24 hours, according to Falls. The National Weather Service in Melbourne forecast was for 2-4 inches.
Flash flood warnings were issued for several hours Wednesday.
In a video captured in Vero Beach and posted Thursday morning, flooding was still visible on neighborhood streets − however, some of it was low enough that a dachshund could be seen running safely through it.
Many neighborhoods across the city reported flooding, including streets and low areas. The Vero Beach Regional Airport saw significant flooding.
“We have never seen flooding at the Vero Beach Regional Airport like this before,” Airport Director Todd Scher said Wednesday. “The runways are underwater, and the newly formed lake extends from the Piper Aircraft building to 43rd Avenue.”
Water levels on Wednesday were high enough that some took to the streets in airboats.
In downtown Vero Beach, air conditioning units, downed tree limbs and remnants of sheds littered an alleyway east of 15th Avenue and north of 23rd Street.
A tree was down in front of First Baptist Church.
A United States Postal Service mail truck was flipped over off 13th Avenue and 21st Street..
