Shares in Mineral Resources continued to climb on Tuesday on the back of higher lithium prices and as speculation strengthens about a possible spin-out of the company’s lithium division.

MinRes closed up $3.58, or 5.3 per cent, to $71.58 after lithium carbonate prices jumped to a new record on Friday of 500,500 yuan ($US71,359) a tonne in China, according to data from Asian Metal.

According to Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, the index of lithium prices has surged more than 120 per cent year to date.

It wasn’t the only benefactor of the renewed bullishness around the energy metal with Pilbara Minerals closing up 14¢, or 3 per cent, to $4.89, Allkem up 62¢, or 4 per cent, to $15.96, IGO up 66¢, or 4.6 per cent, to $14.93 and Liontown Resources up 5.5¢, or 3.4 per cent, to $1.69.
