    Don't know if they were in the thick of it.

    Not good tactics to get the vehicles too close to the fighting scene in tropical zones. One could be ambushed or heard coming and the enemy could have vanished.

    They would have known where the problem was and left the vehicles behind well ahead of the front (The other side wouldn't have heard them coming).
