How do you figure it is a tough call outstation? Going off your logic there are two options for international companies. Do business in the Congo or don't. Lets look at the two seperately and succinctly.

1. Do Business
Benefits the local community by providing jobs and infrastructure.

2. Don't do business
Harms the local community by not providing jobs or local infrastructure.

The only way to beat poverty is to provide people with a means to support themselves. Charity is great but it doesn't really do anything to solve the long term problems. Charity is like patching an old quilt. It works for awhile but eventually it all falls apart. Its pretty obvious to me that Anvil has done the right thing and there is now another agenda being created by a third party. To say that Anvil shouldn't be involved in the Congo is akin to saying that the local populace within the area are not important. Any one with a contrarian view is a socialist or has those tendencies and should try living in a socialist country.

If the foundations are rotten? Give me a break you thing your politicians here have only your best interests at heart? The Congo is making large steps towards becoming a democratic and free environment. Takes a long time to do this and international companies are required to make investments in the country in order for the required infrastructure to be put in place.
