WHAT ARE MONKEY BIKES?
* Monkey bikes are a specific low-powered Honda, the Z50, introduced in the 1960s.
* But the term has been used to cover all small and mini motorbikes, including kit bikes available on the internet.
* Product Safety Australia says mini or monkey bikes can often be unsafe because they are not sold with brand names or serial numbers.
* It is illegal to ride them on the road as they are considered unregistered vehicles.
* The sale of mini bikes with unsafe design features has been banned since August 2011.
* The engines range from 49 to 150cc and they can travel at speeds of up to 80km/h.
* The council at Frankston - where a woman was knocked down on Wednesday - outlawed monkey bikes in 2007 and has since impounded 315 vehicles.
* A variety of small motorbikes are available online.
* Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews says the government will look at any changes it needs to make to tighten rules around monkey bikes.
