The way I look at it is, I ask myself what would I have wanted to happen, if I was one of the miners.
Obviously the first thing I would have wanted is that no other miner is put at the same dangerous risk but at the same time, I would want my family to be looked after and any assets that they had in Greymouth(like a house) to retain its value for the family.
If the mine is closed, PRC will quickly use up its last few Dollars and the whole Greymouth/railroad/harbour economy would suffer.
As I see things, there were 2 main parties who decided that the mine should go ahead, PRC and the NZ Government/DOC. I believe that they need to take responsibility for this tragedy and ensure that they fix things for everyone concerned.
An open cast mine would create a safe environment and would allow the company to provide for the families over the longer term.
