re: straight Bank Cubic Meter, it is a cube of dirt still in the ground. Tonnes are avoided because of the variation in density. Typically you get say 2 tonnes per BCM but it changes.
for coal it only about 1.4. You will see lots of mining costs quoted in BCM but digger productivities are quoted in tph (Tonnes Per Hour) because the mass is normally more of and issue then the volume.
