Tin deposits in the Hodgkinson Province.

Current exploration is being carried out at Jeannie River,
Kings Plains, Herberton Deep Lead, and Leichhardt, Nettle,
Battle and Return Creeks. It is also being undertaken in
watercourses draining rocks of the O’Briens Creek and
Cooktown Supersuites and proximal metasediments of the Hodgkinson Province.

This article describes areas of exploration and historical
alluvial, eluvial and lode tin mining operations. It shows
that current exploration will identify new resources and
regenerate the tin mining industry in this region.

alluvial, eluvial and lode tin mining operations. It shows
that current exploration will identify new resources and
regenerate the tin mining industry in this region.

The year 2004 marked the beginning in a revival of
the tin price when it rose to US$8000 per tonne, attracting
many astute explorers back to the Hodgkinson Province
to take up strategic ground (Figure 1). Current exploration
for alluvial tin is being carried out at Jeannie River
(Supersorb Environmental NL); Kings Plains (Australian
Gold Corporation Pty Ltd); and Herberton Deep Lead,
and Leichhardt, Nettle, Battle and Return Creeks
(Consolidated Tin Mines Ltd). Lode tin exploration
is currently focused on the Cooktown Tinfield (Bluestone
Tin Ltd); Herberton Tinfield (North Queensland Metals
Ltd and Kangaroo Metals Ltd); Koorboora (Queensland Ores
Ltd); Mount Holmes (Kangaroo Metals Ltd); and Mount Garnet
areas (Consolidated Tin Mines Ltd and Auzex Resources Ltd).
