UCG will not be a viable technology in terms of cost in my life time. Sure the technology is quite well understood but we still have plenty of high quality coals around for decades which can be burnt in super critical coal plants at high efficiency.

And yes you can burn UCG gas through a combined cycle but quality becomes an issue and an even bigger issue becomes compression of the gas so it can be used adding 10s of millions to capital cost of the gas turbine. Just ask Alstom or mitsubishi about these costs and difficulties.
