Linc are tenure-squatting all over the world, I wouldn't read too much into that. UCG is completely unviable in undeveloped areas.
South Africa on the other hand, will probably be the first country outside the former USSR to have a viable UCG industry, Eskom are trialling it now, but only as a simple boiler-type power station, not IGCC.
A company looking to build an IGCC power station in South Africa fed by syngas from a UCG operation directly adjacent to it... that I could see working. But all a UCG operation in Botswana is going to do is turn stranded coal into stranded syngas. There is absolutely no competitive advantage to be gained from UCGing deep Botswanan coals when there are untapped deep South African coals sitting underneath a market for it.
