There are an enormity of factors for debate made therein, that have mostly been covered here before. However, one point raised that I will pick up is the idea that SMI have spent so much so far that there is no turning back. IMO, the validity of that point may be weakened under an Xstrata / Glencore alliance. According to reports, the money spent by Xstrata at Tampakan is less than the annual savings that will be made in synergies by amalgamating the two groups.

How favourably will the Glencore side of the combined board view the commitment to the protracted and costly stalemate at Tampakan? Ultimately all the antagonists need to do is facilitate the perpetual delays and eventually get the area declared as a Protected Watershed and it will be game over. Any revised risk assessment done on the project surely has to include that as a potential outcome.
