Demonstrations across the country against the Kallak mine

Today, demonstrations are being arranged at 17 locations around Sweden against the planned mine in Kallak / Gállok. In Stockholm, more than 67,000 signatures against the mine are also handed over to Minister of Trade and Industry Karl-Petter Thorwaldsson.

The mining plans in Kallak / Gállok have been criticized by researchers, Sami villages, the environmental movement, the county administrative board and the UN because it threatens reindeer husbandry, nature in the area and the world heritage Laponia, and also contains relatively small deposits. In the next few weeks, information from the government is expected.

We expect a decision that is based on the highest value of culture, nature and life and that follows international conventions that Sweden is committed to following, says Sara-Elvira Kuhmunen, union president in Sáminuorra and one of those who today hand over the collection of names with over 67 000 signatures to the Minister of Trade and Industry.

On Friday 11 February, demonstrations will also take place in 17 places around the country in solidarity with the affected Sami villages.

- Sweden pretends to be a progressive country that fights for human rights and wants to be a pioneer for the environment and climate. But when you scratch the surface, this is what comes out.
