valen1828, as i remember it the GST was first mooted by Paul Keating in the early 80's while treasurer in the Hawke government and everyone yelled about a Banana Republic, finally it was introduced by the Howard government, to the despair of the entire nation, so your looking at a decade plus of debate most of which will be centred around self-interest as is clearly being demonstrated by BHP and RIO, i think the lesson in all of this is to make sure you invest in companies with money in the bank and the ability to go into production in the short term
