Energy problems in Chile
Friday, April 02, 2004
SOME Chile copper mines may face a fuel crisis after Argentina said it planned to start rationing the delivery of natural gas because of surging demand inside its own borders.
Gas deliveries to the northern region of Chile are reportedly expected to be cut by 10.5%, forcing some mines to fall back on diesel and other fuels to maintain operations.
The changeover is unlikely to affect copper production but it will increase the cost of production.
