I don't know if I've ever earned any respect: That is a question for others to answer.

I don't go around seeking the respect of others, but I have done things so that I can maintain my self-respect. That is all the respect I need.

If others choose to treat me respectfully, I will reciprocate. However, I believe coveting respect from others is vainglorious.
