Fortitude, ADH and CVI consolidate to buy mining tenements in Angola.
The Angolan Government says the bill is $30 million, so each pays $10 million.
Later the Angolan Government realises it should have only been $25 million. To rectify this, they give MS $5 million to return to the 3 companies.
On his way back MS realises that he does not know how to divide the $5 million equally into 3. As the companies' shareholders don't know the total of the revised fees, he decides to just give each company $1 million back and keep $2 million for himself.
Now that Fortitude, ADH and CVI have been given $1 million back, each has paid $9 million.
Notice that 3 x $9 million = $27 million, and MS has $2 million.
But $2 million + $27 million = $29 million.
If the companies originally handed over $30 million, what happened to the other $1 million?
