Wow, what great & exciting news.
Here are some known advantages/disadvantages of rotary engines, articulated in the past:
Advantages:
1) 'Simpler' design with far less moving parts than a piston engine
2) Smoothness
3) Compactness
4) High power to weight ratio
5) Almost immune to catastrophic failure (keeps rotating longer than other engines, if engine fails)
6) Loves to to stay in the high rev band
Disadvantages:
1) Increased oil consumption, compared to other engines (could be fixed by now)
2) Some reports of flooding on cold starts (could be fixed by now)
3) Requires specialised engineers for maintenance, not everyone bush mechanic will be able to work on this type of engine
The first patent for the rotary (Wankel) engine was granted in 1929 to German engineer Felix Wankel and this type of engine now runs in cars, go-carts, jet skis, snow mobiles, chain saws & indeed all kind of aircraft.
The Mazda RX8 features a rotary engine and listen to how Jermeny Clarkson raves about the engine at 2:30.
Finally, here is a link to a site discussing the Rotron Engine range: Smaller - Lighter - Further (poor audio, but very informative) and another from the USA (great audio).
This is really exciting news and this will no doubt be reflected in established and new MJP investor sentiment from now on.
Great stuff, MJP.
