Markson and no sparks
MAX Markson, the man who reckons he can make anyone famous, was nowhere to be seen when his client Chameleon Mining faced the Federal Court in Sydney yesterday. Chameleon, which hired Markson's publicity firm Markson Sparks earlier this year, is suing Murchison Metals and several former directors, claiming it has rights to its mining projects in Western Australia.
After Chameleon chairman Benny Elias' peptalk about teamwork yesterday, we'd have thought that Markson would have a front row at the proceedings. Especially after his attention-grabbing press release spruiking the company's "potential $1.5 billion claim" in July -- a figure that has yet to be tested.
However, it seems that Elias has bypassed his glamour publicist for the more staid approach of Sydney firm Citadel, which specialises in the area of corporate public relations. It's operative Helen McCombie is no doubt familiar with the Chameleon case, given her husband Bill Bishop has, for time to time, held shares in the company.
Elias was keen to emphasise that Markson had not been "dumped", but rather redeployed.
"They (Markson Sparks) still work for us in a different way -- a more focused way," insisted the former rugby league player. "They do all the colourful stuff. They look after our events."
Who would have thought that a mining tiddler forced to live hand-to-mouth could afford two PRs and an entertainment budget? Yet, Markson and his crew are helping Elias organise a grand final luncheon ahead of this week's National Rugby League showdown.
