    CUT PASTE SECTION)
    8. Japan Hydrogen Society impacts start to be felt in the hydrogen market
Volume demand for hydrogen outside of the traditional markets of refinery and captive hydrogen has so far been marginal. Although longer term volumes from the forecasted fuel cell vehicle fleet should see ramp up, at present, hydrogen production companies are still focused on the more traditional markets.
Now though, Japan, once again, is gearing up to change this. With the nationwide focus on hydrogen for use in power plants, cars, homes, etc., the demand for hydrogen is projected to be high enough to develop a fleet of cryogenic or liquefied hydrogen tankers to ship high volumes of hydrogen produced overseas back to Japan.
Two deals unveiled in 2015 to this end are:
Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) has a plant to liquefy hydrogen at super-low temperatures and technologies for shipping vessels and storage tanks. The company have a technology to extract hydrogen from lignite8. In Australia, the price of lignite is cheap, which allows a projected $0.25 per m3 hydrogen production cost at a daily production level plant of 770 tons. To put this in context, 770 tons of hydrogen each day can supply 3 million FCVs or 1 GW level hydrogen power plant. Note there is nothing published on the emissions levels from this production route! So in short, producing hydrogen in Australia from lignite and shipping it back to Japan.
JX Nippon Oil & Energy will construct a shipping facility for high pressure hydrogen in Negishi Refinery, Yokohama City, for start-up in FY 2016. The company is said to be targeting a 40% share in the automobile fuel market for FCV hydrogen. It is assumed that this is just in Japan.
