MANTLE Mining will hold a second open day for the public at a drilling site near Bacchus Marsh this Saturday as part of its community liaison program.

The timing of the open day ties in with the resumption of drilling after the Christmas break on the last 10 holes of its 15-hole exploration program being run in the area.

The first open Day was held last September.

Mantle Mining exploration manager Callum Lamont said the company had developed a strong relationship with landholders involved in the program and had also met with landholders nearby that could be impacted by the work.

“There is certainly support and understanding in the community and this second open day will provide a good opportunity for more of the community to become aware of what the Bacchus Marsh drill program is designed to achieve – and the low impact of a drilling site,’’ he said.

“The public will be able to see the compact drill rig and samples of the 61cm diameter core it extracts as well as displays of the 3D graphic image which shows how drilling data developed from the core analysis is transformed into a picture of the ground underneath to give an increased understanding of the geology of the region.

“The sub-surface image developed at this stage includes data from some 70 boreholes from previous drilling programs carried out in the Bacchus Marsh region by both government and private companies.

“It also demonstrates the gaps in the existing underground information which the current Mantle Mining exploration program is designed to fill in.

“Geologists will be on hand to talk with the public and answer questions regarding the drilling program.”

Local members of Parliament, Moorabool Mayor Pat Griffin and local councillors, and government regulators as well as the public have been invited to the open day, which will run from 11am to 4pm.

The drill site for the open day is located off the Bacchus Marsh – Balliang Road, down Alby’s Lane.

There is parking access close to the site.
