Having attended the conference, I can confirm that it was Tolga who mentioned the requirement for chemical processing, not anyone else. I'm sure fellow attendee @Riskon22 can back me up on that.
When prompted, Simon Moores added that acid usage in processing is "not a problem if it is managed properly", but I cannot recall either he or Andrew Miller stating that chemical purification was an absolute requirement
