Most scientists never made the outlandish AGW claims in the past (OK some did but they were broke - there is no money in marine biology or paleontology). The media (with the Phds who do not have a scientific careear) and IPCC (railway engineer - again no money) plus the usual 'animal farm' socialists saw a chance to scare/control/gain wealth and took it.
Normal scientists just want a living wage and the ability to follow their passion. How many actual climatologists/geophysicists have you seen telling you the sky is falling?
I admit I wish they were more vocal now and in the past to convey caution on jumping to premature conclusions but the ones like Judith Lucy who did (the term lukewarmer was coined for her) - basically had to retire from the business being hounded by the religious left.
If the empirical evidence continues to stack up against CAGW then all these same opportunists except the truly eco religious will flip and make money 'exposing the scam'.
