olympic dam isnt initially open cut....is a running underground mine.....they used a shaft to get down to 420 metres and commenced mining from there....they have been mining from around the 360 to 640 level.
While the open cut is being done...underground mining will continue......it will be open cut and underground mining......If the money for minerals is there it will be mined.....they will find shallower regions in time
