    farmboy,

The issue is carbon pollution, almost exclusively in the form of the compound carbon dioxide derived from burning fossil carbonaceous material. This is filthy carbon pollution and it doesn't need to be black or even just a little bit brown. It is filthy because pouring it into our atmosphere is wrong. It is carbon pollution because burning carbon is the source. Just as I wrote in my previous post, pollution may be legitimately identified using the name of the source element.

Here is a web reference to chromium pollution.

    http://www.lenntech.com/periodic/water/chromium/chromium-and-water.htm

Elemental chromium is not toxic but the reference identifies a number of toxic chromium compounds and ions. The term CHROMIUM POLLUTION clearly refers to these compounds rather than the element.

In exactly the same way, carbon pollution can refer to the deleterious effects of excess CO2 released when fossil fuels are burnt. It is past time we started to make some modest contribution towards this filthy carbon pollution.
