Yes, vaccination is essential for achieving proper level of herd immunity. In the case of flu, we haven't even been successful with vaccines as new strains keep emerging every year making the existing vaccines ineffective.

Of course, we can always go back to pre-vaccine days, when the quality of life was lower and the mortality rate from now-preventable disease was much higher. People will tell you that the human race survived back then, but often forget to mention about the quality of life, life expectancy, and death rate.
