Yes, the bay is Trial Bay and you would have eaten at the Trial Bay Kiosk near the Trial Bay Gaol.

Why they call it a kiosk is beyond me but the view over the bay as you dine is brilliant.

The area is actually Arakoon as you would see from the Google earth map.

The original prisoners from the gaol were used to start a huge breakwater way out into the bay so the bay could be used as a deepwater port.

The breakwater actually caused the bay to fill with sand and so was abandoned.

In WW1 the abandoned gaol became an internment camp for Germans in this country as silly as that sounds now.

In fact a memorial not far away for interns that died was actually blown up by some local zealots.

The gaol now has no roof and is just a tourist attraction and is used for music concerts and the occasional summer ball etc.

The bay faces north like Byron Bay and so at times lacks a good surf but when that happens there are beaches on the east side that we use. Gap Beach is brilliant and in summer when Main Beach and Horseshoe are packed or flat we go there and most times has half a dozen or less people on it.
