Interest Rates
The Economist Intelligence Unit expects the central bank to leave its benchmark interest rate unchanged this year, even as inflation accelerates. Consumer prices rose an annual 8.8 percent in January, exceeding the bank's 3 percent to 6 percent target range for a 10th consecutive month.
``The cause of inflation has nothing to do with South Africa, and raising interest rates is not going to help,'' Meth-Cohn said. ``There is not much to be gained by raising interest rates.''
