The market doesn't grow at a steady linear rate either. It doesn't put on 500 points a year, or whatever.
In both scenarios, that's why you look at a family of curves/lines. The chart that started this discussion had lines on the linear chart with 1:1 marked on a particular slope, and various other slopes at 3:1, 2:1, 1:2, 1:3 etc.
