This is regularly touted in AKPs investor material as being an ultra low cost product. It also makes sense that it will be, considering the simple structure and vast reduction in number of components in an AKP chip versus a traditional speaker device. Chips are already produced at peanuts for computing applications so I'm really confident that cost won't be a factor holding us back.
I have also read a few apple and pear comparisons on this thread in recent times. This is a disruptive innovation so your comparison with a more efficient solar panel is not a great example. I understand the point you were trying to make about cost being a potential inhibitor to new ideas however disruptive innovations tend not to be so price sensitive .... Just think of plasma and LCD tv screens when they first came out at around 10x the price of traditional cathode ray TVs.
