I agree household debt is too high, but does that chart offset assets? Debt is ok if it's more than matched by assets. If I have 200k debt but have 400k assets I'm better off than someone with no debt at all.
Another trick the doomers use is to count up the outstanding credit card totals, where much of it is only normal transactions. At any point in time I can have 10k+ of credit card debt but I never pay interest as it comes out automatically on the due date.
