A journalist for the Australian isn't going to publish that without an "off the record" comment from someone close to the company. The downside for their reputation is not worth it, especially for a run-of-the-mill takeover rumour story.
The company wouldn't leak this information either unless they were concerned. You only get one chance to leak this type of information, as subsequent leaks will be dismissed.
I reckon we might also get a Walyering update if they are trying to give the share price a bit of a boost.
