I was in a Muslim country during Ramadan where day time temperatures reached 50 degrees centigrade. I thought that people were expected to behave insanely by avoiding the intake of water from sunrise to sunset.
There was a tendency for people to sleep during the day and pig out (bad pun but accurate?) during the night. It got so bad in places that we were greeted with vomit in the streets in the morning as a result of overeating during the night.
The impression I got from many is that the Ramadan fast had degraded into an essentially meaningless ritual.
