The last time a downtrend for the SP500 index first got 20% below the market’s recent high intraday was March 17, 2008. It fell as much as 2.4% that day but finished off just 0.9%. Have a look at the swings playing out three months either side of that date in 2008. It is incredible how they correlate, and in the past few days are almost bar for bar.
