That's not actually true. The Model S has a swappable battery, and the stations can actually swap it in about half the time it takes to fill the average petrol tank.
As it turns out, hardly anyone seems to use it because there's a fee per swap (somewhat less than the price of a tank of petrol) whereas the superchargers are free to use. Seems people would prefer to wait half an hour rather than pay ~$50.
