My brief take on HEWI is there are two main benefits:
1. You don't have to drill deeper through the much harder granite.
2. That layer has improved permeability which means higher flow rates.
There may be other benefits as well. You still have to fracture the layer to create the reservoir, right? Perhaps the fraccing is easier as well.
