After Oxford, Dr M to address Cambridge Union

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is set to address the Cambridge Union later this month, five months after attending a similar talk in Oxford.
In announcing this, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said, after months of planning, Mahathir will be the first “Malaysian and democratically-elected leader” from Asean to speak at both the Oxford and Cambridge Unions.
“It is confirmed, 16th June in Cambridge,” the youth and sports minister said in an Instagram post this evening.
The Muar MP said Mahathir’s previous session at the Oxford Union was well covered by both the local and international media.
“Tun M will always position Malaysia as the true representative of Asean.”
The Cambridge Union has hosted a wide platform of speakers, including the Dalai Lama, Reverend Jesse Jackson, former US presidents Ronald Reagan and Theodore Roosevelt, as well as former Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.
In January, Mahathir became the first Malaysian leader to address the Oxford Union, making it to a list of illustrious leaders such as Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher who had spoken there.
Oxford Union’s invitation to Mahathir led to criticisms by an interest group representing Jewish students who called him “an open and unrepentant anti-Semite”.
At the talk, Mahathir revisited his criticism of democracy and spoke about his strong views against Israel. He also defended his past record during his previous term, leading the country for 22 years.
And Dr. M continues his road trip. I wonder if someone will ask him about Bee Yin Yeo. She may yet become a famous alumni.
