It is probably due to the success ratio and immediate access to welfare benefits once whatever story you have chosen to tell has been accepted as was the case it seems with the failed Rudd/Gillard/Rudd regime and their open-borders/big-Australia-by-stealth program...

Obviously with a few hours safe flight from Indonesia to Australia costing only a few hundred dollars the choice of paying some $10,000 or so to a criminal gangster people smuggler/trafficker to be placed on a rickety old boat at the mercy of the 4 winds and tides would seem to be a simple one for a sane and rational person with a valid story to present to Australian officials....

So tho choice of method would seem to tell the entire story of these illegal entrants not too dissimilar to the question of would a person who has lots of cash in his bank account and wants to withdraw a small portion of it, put on a face mask, pick up a gun and rob the bank, or just walk into the bank and withdraw the cash he needs from his account...
