The Australian and Singaporean governments may be close to signing a limited open-skies deal. Australia's Transport Minister, John Anderson, left on the night of 21 September 2003 for talks with his Singaporean counterpart, Yeo Cheow Tong. An Anderson spokesman says the aim is to announce an improved air services alliance on 23 September 2003. Currently, Qantas can operate out of Singapore to no more than two destinations, while Singapore International Airlines (SIA) can fly on only to New Zealand. SIA wants to compete with Qantas on the Australia-US route.
