Manfield said she thought corporations should pay a carbon tax but is opposed to such a levy being passed down to the individual householder.
"If the government gets marginally elected on the promise of no carbon tax -- then surely they've got to have the ethics to follow through on it," she said.
Manfield later sought to retract her statements after she said she was "blasted" in a telephone call from an organiser of 1 Million Women, a carbon emissions reduction campaign for which she is an ambassador.
"Those statements are mine as an individual and not part of any organisation," she said last night.
Ms Allis said the inclusion of her name on the statement of support for the "We Say Yes" campaign was a clerical error.
"I think like most Australians I don't know enough about where the money is going to go," she said.
"Until I know that, I won't support a carbon tax."
Ms Allis added that she questioned the Gillard government's ability to successfully execute a carbon tax.
