There may be regional conflicts, but I don't think there will be another "world war". Writers who like to quote history and past global military conflicts tend to, in my mind, over look one thing: 21st weaponry is so different, its vast destructive powers.
If there is a direct confrontation between the US and Russia, and let's say Russia is losing at the conventional warfare levels, I cannot see why Russia will surrender meekly. It has thousands of nuclear warheads that can reach continental US, and this is its last resort defence for national survival, and I don't think the Russians will surrender that.
Regarding China, it has been quietly building up its defence capability over decades to defend itself against any American aggression. From recent press reports, it now has the ability and capability to strike continental US as well.
The real issue is: the US is a declining global power, how it manages its decline, or manages the reality need to now share influence with other global powers, is the one to watch.
Regarding the EU, if it comes to the crunch, I don't think it will go all the way with the US in any confrontation with Russia. It knows it can be wiped out by Russian nuclear strikes.
Out of necessity, Russia and China will join hands for now.
Just some thoughts from me.
