Icon managing director Ray James said the company had a "very valuable asset" in ATP855 but exploration was "a very expensive exercise and we must fund our way".

"The company has never gone out and raised a cashbox and we haven't gone out borrowing money for exploration," he said.

"In funding this new discovery we can't be confident exactly what those costs are going to be because we are still in the exploration phase.

"But it is essential we stay in the game. The only way we can fund our program is to issue shares or wind down our interest in the block."
