    ClubS, that reminds me of a book I'm reading atm. "Shantaram" written by an aussie ex-junkie and jail bird who escaped over the wall of Pentridge and fled to Bombay.
    First part centres around some interesting characters who shoot the breeze at the Leopold cafe - discussing some of life's truths. This one struck me as just what you were getting at in you post:

    "I think that we all, each one of us, we have to earn our future", she said slowly. "I think the future is like anything else that's important. It has to be earned. If we don't earn it, we don't have a future at all. And if we don't earn it, if we don't deserve it, we have to live in the present, more or less forever. Or worse, we have to live in the past."

    Great book -recommend it to anyone
