Waiting For Goro
More trouble for Goro nickel project
Metals Insider - 20 March 2007
More trouble seems to be brewing for the giant Goro nickel project in New Caledonia. The latest initiative by opponents of the project—led by the indigenous Rheebu Nuu group—is to build a makeshift village on a piece of land designated for a waste pipeline.
Rheebu Nuu is once again issuing ultimatums to CVRD-Inco with thinly-veiled threats of further disruption.
The latest developments could have serious implications for the nickel market. First production from Goro has already been pushed back to late 2008 and CVRD’s most recent statements suggest it may struggle even to meet that time-table. Cost over-runs—an endemic problem across the whole mining sector—are only going to be aggravated by further direct-action opposition such as this.
