Kangankunde Mining Project Progress
An Australian company, Lindian Resources Limited, is making steady progress toward the mining of over 60 million tonnes of rare earth minerals at the Kangankunde Hills in the Balaka district.
Rare earth elements are used in high-tech applications and motor vehicle components, including batteries.
On Wednesday, Minister of Mining Kenneth Zikhale Ng'oma attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the access road that connects Lindian Resources Limited's site to the main road.
During the ceremony, Ng'oma emphasized the importance of local communities benefiting from the mining activities in their area. He also urged the company to prioritize environmental management to ensure sustainable and responsible mining practices.
Ng'oma reiterated his ministry's commitment to collaborating with investors and relevant stakeholders in the mining sector to create an enabling environment for growth.
"His Excellency, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, initiated the ATM Strategy, which has begun to bear good fruits for Malawians. My ministry is working tirelessly to ensure swift licensing and MDAs are in place for the proper management of the mining sector," Ng'oma said.
On his part, Lindian Resources Limited Board Chairman Rob Martin highlighted that the company is working hard to ensure that the mining starts as soon as possible.
Martin revealed that the company involves communities for both parties to benefit from the Mining activities.
He said the company has built school blocks for the primary school close to the mining site as well as the road which will benefit the company and the nearby communities.
The Kangankunde Rare Earths Project is the cornerstone of Lindian’s asset portfolio, representing one of the world’s largest deposits of rare earth elements.
