Trouble is it does scare people away and recovery can be long drawn out. Supporters of shorting say real value returns after time but with commodity stocks they often only have a short time of high profitability so there peak time can be cut short. Also if you are in a super fund that lends stock out and about to retire then you do not have long term objectives. So the fund makes money from commission on your loss. I agree that stock lent our should be only by permission of those who will be affected by capital/gain loss on a stock.
FMG hard to value, maybe would have gone down without shorters, just hard to accept it could have been your stock that led to your losses.
