The fact is forests are being cut down for the express purpose of making solar panels from silicon.

China produces 2.5 million tonnes of silicon annually, and 1.7 tonnes of timber is used to produce each tonne = 4.25 million tonnes of timber.
China is clamping down on pollution and charcoal is being targeted, as a result more charcoal is being imported from Myanmar.

Interesting fact, even battery powered cars are made of steel and a deoxidizer thats used in making all steel is ferro silicon (FeSi) and again to make FeSi charcoal is used. China produces 4.5 million tonnes of FeSi annually.
