I was reading about this one yesterday. So sad, and for the girls father who was surfing with her at the time. I was speaking to a mate this morning who works away on the nets around Ballina etc for the DPI. He says the whites have thinned out around there over the past few months since the attacks along that part of the coast. We were actually surfing while talking about it! He said the shark transmitter a few hundred meters from us has never picked up any tagged whites...only bulls from a nearby river. It's always in the back of your mind.
